š Have you ever encountered the poignant, yet hauntingly beautiful tale of The Little Match Girl? Penned long ago by Hans Christian Andersen, it remains one of the most deeply resonant stories ever told.

š The story unfolds on a New Yearās Eve, following a young girl shivering amidst the frozen snow as she tries in vain to sell her matches. To ward off the biting cold, she strikes her matches one by one, kindling tiny flames that awaken glowing visionsāa roaring stove, a festive feast, a shimmering Christmas tree š², and ultimately, her beloved late grandmother. In a moment of quiet grace, her grandmother gently takes her by the hand, lifting her soul to the heavens where cold and hunger can touch her no more.

š In this post, Zonkatron reflects on how this tender work of fiction mirrors a profound reality: the mystical experiences often reported by those standing on the threshold of life and death.
š”While listening to the podcast Diary Of A CEO featuring hospice physician Dr. Christopher Kerr, I realized that this story mirrors the very visions I experienced years ago during the awakening of my own spiritual journey.” – Zonkatron
š Doctors and nurses who work in hospiceāwhich is a special, caring place for people at the end of their livesāsee things like this all the time! When people are preparing to pass away, they often have super peaceful dreams or visions. Just like the Little Match Girl, they might see warm, happy places or feel like their family members who died a long time ago are right there in the room, holding their hand and comforting them.
Itās really amazing because scientists used to think sick people were just confused, but now we know these visions are totally normal and feel super real to them! š The Little Match Girl felt really scared and cold at first, but her visions made her feel safe and happy. In the exact same way, hospice patients often stop feeling scared or in pain because their brain and spirit are giving them a wonderful, comforting experience to help them get ready to say goodbye.
š¼In the story, the townspeople find the little girl the next morning in the snow, and even though she died, she has a big, happy smile on her face. The people watching donāt get it, but she had the most wonderful journey on the inside! Hospice nurses say they see this happen a lot, too. Right at the end, sick patients often look so calm, quiet, and at peace, almost like theyāre smiling because they are seeing something beautiful that nobody else can see.
š So, The Little Match Girl isn’t just a sad fairytale to make us cry. It’s a realistic description of a spiritual experience. It’s also very important to notice the blissful feeling you get from a spiritual experience. A spiritual experience isn’t just a paranormal experience, it’s an absolutely beautiful heartwarming experience. That’s what separates it from delirium, hallucinations, and psychosis. Any scary or distressing paranormal experience is NOT and should not be confused with a spiritual experience.

š¼How many people get to have spiritual experiences like theseā
Not so many. Only about 5% of people get to experience seeing a loved one from spirits in an actual way. On the other hand, more than 50% of people have experienced spiritual visits from loved ones in their dreams.
