The Connection Experience

In theory, anyone can connect to God in whatever way it feels natural to them. Practically, most people are not as spontaneous, so I have constructed the Connection exercise to invite you to try one possible way (my favorite way actually) to connect to God.

Are you ready to experience the extraordinary?

It is time for the Connection Experience. This is a straightforward yet powerful method to connect to God. It gives you a tangible subtle yet powerful proof that you’re not alone in this world and that there is a Divine being watching over you.

How to do it?

It consists of four simple steps:
1- Surrender: Lie on your back and consciously release all worries and physical tension.
2- Invitation: Sincerely invite the Divine to connect with you and open your spiritual channels.
3- Observation: Pay close attention to your physical sensations—tingling, warmth, vibrations, or any subtle shifts.
4- Demand: Ask for more. Request greater intensity, a deeper connection, and stronger divine energy. Then, simply observe.

What to Focus on?

The Connection Experience is often hindered by the noise in your own mind. To truly break through the veil of the mundane, you must understand the principle of Intensity and Relaxation. When you ask for “more intensity” during the practice, you are essentially signaling to the Divine that you are ready for the full weight of the experience. Without this request, the experience is at a dull level that is easily forgotten.

By lying on your back, you remove the physical effort of balance, allowing the nervous system to settle. In this state of bodily surrender, your verbal request for more intensity acts as a steering wheel. Speaking out loud is particularly powerful because the vibration of your own voice grounds your intention to venture into the spiritual world.

A lack of intensity leads to the “Did I imagine that?” syndrome. This is why clearing doubts is a core pillar of this experiment. If you go into a deep meditative state with only 10% of your heart, you will get a 10% result. Later that evening, you’ll tell yourself it was just a byproduct of being tired or a trick of the light. We are aiming for what psychologists sometimes call a “Peak Experience.” This is an event so profound and vivid that it becomes a landmark in your life. Like the first time someone sees the Grand Canyon, the sheer scale of the reality removes the possibility of it being a “hallucination.”

Consider the case of Dr. Eben Alexander or other individuals who have had profound near-death experiences. When they return, they don’t say, “I think I saw something.” They say, “It was more real than this world.” That is the “Wow!” moment we are aiming for. By demanding intensity, you are asking for a “High Definition” spiritual encounter. When the colors are brighter than real life and the feeling of love is more tangible than a physical hug, skepticism has no soil to grow in. You want an experience that is so robust that your logical mind, which loves to debunk things, simply has to sit down and be quiet.

Patience is the fuel that keeps the engine running when nothing seems to be happening. In our modern world of 30-second videos and instant downloads, we have lost the art of the “vigil.” This process can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes of sustained focus. Many people quit at the 4-minute mark, right before the breakthrough occurs. Think of it like heating a pot of water. For a long time, nothing happens—the water just gets warmer. But if you turn off the heat at 210 degrees, you never get steam. You must stay with the process until the boiling point.

Persistence is often illustrated in the story of Robert Bruce and the spider. After failing many times, he watched a spider try to throw its thread to a beam over and over until it finally stuck. In your practice, you must be that spider. Repeat your request for intensity like a broken record. This isn’t about being “annoying” to the Divine; it’s about proving to the spiritual world that you are serious. If you are hesitant or fearful, you are essentially keeping one foot on the brake. The energy remains dormant because you haven’t yet given it a clear “green light” through your persistence.

This leads us to the necessity of Serious Intention. This isn’t a parlor trick or a game to play for Sunday afternoon entertainment. In many ancient traditions, such as the rites of passage in various indigenous cultures, the seeker had to prepare for days. They understood that hitting the “on” switch for spiritual energy also initiates a “clearing” or healing process. When you invite the light in, it naturally illuminates the dark corners. This is why old emotional issues—grief you thought was gone, or anger you’ve suppressed—might suddenly surface during or after the session.

Think of it like cleaning a house that hasn’t been touched in years. When you first start scrubbing, the water gets very dirty. You might even feel worse for a moment because you are finally seeing the grime. However, this is a sign of success, not failure. A case study of this can be found in many “Shadow Work” practitioners who find that their greatest spiritual breakthroughs are preceded by a “dark night of the soul” or a brief period of emotional turbulence. Treat the process with respect, and understand that the healing might feel like a bit of a “workout” for your soul.

Now, let’s look at Troubleshooting. The most common reason people fail is a Lack of Time or Relaxation. If you are trying to squeeze a profound spiritual breakthrough between a conference call and picking up the kids, you are sabotaging yourself. You cannot “rush” a skydive; you have to get in the plane, reach the altitude, and then jump. If your body is tense—shoulders hunched, jaw clenched—your nervous system is in “fight or flight” mode. In that state, the brain is focused on survival, not expansion. You must give yourself the luxury of a “time-out” from the world.

A Lack of Eagerness is the second major barrier. Imagine someone going on a first date but looking at their watch every two minutes and acting bored. It’s unlikely a deep connection will form. Passionate curiosity is the “magnetism” that draws the experience to you. Throughout history, the people who had the most profound insights—from scientists like Newton to saints like Teresa of Avila—were characterized by an intense, almost burning desire to know the truth. If you approach this with a “let’s see if this works” shrug, the energy will likely mirror your lukewarm attitude.

We must also address Heavy Emotional Baggage. It is a common misconception that the Divine is a vending machine that ignores our internal state. If a person is in the midst of active drug abuse or a severe, untreated mental health crisis, their internal “circuitry” is often too fried or volatile to handle a high-intensity experience safely. In these cases, the Divine acts with a form of “mercy by omission.” It will not force a “Wow!” moment on someone whose psyche might shatter from the intensity. If this is where you are, the first step is always grounded, practical emotional healing.

Fear-Based Beliefs act as a psychological firewall. If you grew up being told that any spiritual experience outside of a specific box is “demonic” or “dangerous,” your subconscious will protect you by blocking the experience. Even if you think you’ve moved past those beliefs, they often linger in the basement of the mind. An anecdote from a meditation teacher once noted a student who couldn’t relax because they were terrified of “leaving their body” and not being able to get back. Their fear acted as an anchor. You must remind yourself that the Divine is the source of safety and love, not a source of trickery.

The best way to overcome these barriers is to treat the experience like an Experiment in Truth. If you are lying on your back and feel nothing for ten minutes, don’t get frustrated. Instead, ask yourself: “Am I truly relaxed? Is my jaw tight? Am I actually eager, or am I just performing a task?” Adjust your posture, breathe deeper into your belly, and renew your request. The shift from “nothing” to “something” often happens in a single heartbeat. One moment you are just a person lying on a bed, and the next, you are part of a vast, humming ocean of light.

Another historical example is the practice of “Incubation” in ancient Greek temples. Seekers would travel for miles, perform rituals, and then sleep in the temple, asking for a dream or a healing. They didn’t just walk in and walk out. They gave the experience space. By dedicating 30 minutes to this, you are telling your brain that this moment is more important than your phone, your emails, or your to-do list. That hierarchy of importance is what allows the “highlight moment” to finally break through your everyday filters.

When you finally do feel that “spark”—whether it’s a warmth in the chest, a tingling in the hands, or a sudden sense of overwhelming peace—lean into it. This is where the “more intensity” request becomes vital. Instead of pulling back in surprise, say (out loud or internally), “Yes, more of this! Give me more!” This prevents the experience from plateauing. It’s like blowing on a small ember to turn it into a flame. You are participating in the creation of your own “Wow!” moment.

The “clearing” process mentioned earlier is actually a gift. Think of a case study of a person who carries chronic tension in their neck from years of repressed grief. During this exercise, as the intensity rises, they might suddenly feel a need to cry or even cough. Once that physical/emotional release happens, the spiritual energy can flow much more freely. Do not be alarmed by these physical reactions; they are the “ballast” being thrown off the ship so that it can sail faster.

Persistence also builds a “muscle” of focus. Even if your first attempt doesn’t result in a life-changing vision, the 30 minutes you spent being mentally persistent have rewired your brain to be more receptive next time. You are training yourself to be a better “antenna.” In the history of science, many breakthroughs came not from the first experiment, but from the tenth, where the conditions were finally perfect and the researcher was finally ready to see what was always there.

To summarize the “Troubleshooting” phase: if you are failing, check your vibration. Are you approaching this with fear or with love? Are you rushing or are you present? Are you holding back or are you eager? The Divine is always broadcasting; the question is whether your “radio” is tuned to the right frequency and turned up loud enough to hear. Most of us have the volume turned down to 1 because we are afraid of what we might hear. Turn it up.

Ultimately, this exercise is about ownership of your reality. By asking for intensity and refusing to settle for doubt, you are claiming your right to have a direct, unmediated experience of the Divine. You are moving from “believing” something because a book told you so, to “knowing” something because you felt it in your own bones. That transition from belief to knowledge is the most powerful transformation a human being can undergo. It changes how you walk, how you talk, and how you view every other person you meet.

As you finish your 30-minute session, don’t jump up immediately. Sit with the “afterglow.” Let the experience integrate into your physical body. Even if it was just a small shift, acknowledge it. This gratitude seals the experience and makes the next “skydive” even easier. You have begun a process of healing and connection that, if pursued with serious intention and a relaxed heart, will leave no room for the shadows of skepticism to return.

How Does God Appear to You?

One of the most beautiful aspects of the Divine is its adaptability. It is like a master translator who speaks every language ever invented. The Divine will always manifest in a way that feels safe and comprehensible to you. If the vastness of the universe were to show itself all at once, it would be like trying to take a sip of water from a high-pressure fire hose—it would be overwhelming. Instead, it uses “filters.” It presents itself in a “user interface” that your specific mind can handle without breaking into a panic.

This is why the Divine often takes a human form. Throughout history, we see this in “Theophanies”—moments where the infinite takes on a finite shape to communicate. In the story of the Bhagavad Gita, the divine essence takes the form of Krishna, a charioteer and friend, to give counsel to Arjuna. By appearing as a person, the Divine removes the “fear factor,” allowing for a conversation rather than a confrontation. It meets you where you are, rather than demanding you jump across an infinite gap to meet it.

Sometimes, this manifestation goes a step further and appears as a deceased loved one. This is a common point of skepticism, but it’s important to see the mechanics behind it. Imagine you are in a foreign country, lost and scared, and suddenly your favorite uncle walks around the corner. Your heart rate drops, your breathing slows, and you are ready to listen. The Divine utilizes these familiar, loving images not to trick you, but to provide a “bridge” of trust. It uses the “vocabulary of your heart” to greet you.

There is a famous anecdote of a woman who, during a deep spiritual experience, saw her grandmother sitting in a rocking chair, knitting. The grandmother gave her a specific message of comfort that changed her life. Was it “literally” her grandmother’s ghost? Or was it the Divine wearing her grandmother’s “costume” because that was the only image that would make the woman feel safe enough to receive the message? In the realm of the Spirit, the “form” is less important than the “essence” of the love being delivered.

It is vital to understand that this is not a hallucination. A hallucination is usually chaotic, frightening, or a symptom of a brain misfiring. A Divine encounter, by contrast, is coherent, peaceful, and life-affirming. It leaves you feeling more “sane” and grounded than you did before. In psychiatric case studies, there is a clear distinction between a “psychotic break” and a “spiritual emergence.” The latter brings a sense of unity and clarity that lasts for years, whereas the former creates fragmentation and fear.

Think of the Divine like a cosmic actor. An actor can play many roles—a king, a beggar, a teacher—but the person behind the mask remains the same. If you see a “Spirit Guide” who looks like an ancient sage, it’s because your subconscious associates wisdom with that image. If you see a light that feels like a parent’s embrace, it’s because that is your definition of safety. The Divine is the ultimate shapeshifter, perfectly mirroring what you need in that exact moment to take the next step in your healing.

We must also respect the “Unseen World” as a place of intelligence. Just as we study the ecology of a forest, there is an “ecology of Spirit.” There are layers and dimensions to this existence that we are just beginning to glimpse through the lens of quantum physics. Scientists like David Bohm spoke of the “Implicate Order,” a deeper level of reality where everything is interconnected. When we reach out to the Divine, we are essentially sending a signal into that Implicate Order and waiting for the echo to bounce back in a form we can recognize.

Patience is required because we are learning a new language. For decades, we have been taught to trust only what we can touch and measure with a ruler. The Divine speaks in the language of intuition, feeling, and “synchronicity.” An anecdote that illustrates this is the “Small Still Voice” mentioned in various traditions. It doesn’t scream; it whispers. If you are looking for a thunderbolt, you might miss the gentle nudge or the sudden, warm memory of a grandfather that brings a tear to your eye.

The reason the Divine is “free from judgment” is because it understands the whole story. Human judgment is usually based on a tiny fragment of information. We judge people because we don’t know their trauma, their biology, or their struggle. The Divine, being the underlying consciousness of all things, sees the entire tapestry. It sees why you made that mistake, why you feel that shame, and why you are afraid. Because it sees everything, it can only feel compassion. It is like a parent watching a toddler stumble; the parent doesn’t “judge” the fall, they just want to help the child get back up.

When we talk about “Spirit Guides,” we are often referring to focused streams of this Divine intelligence. Just as a single sunbeam is part of the sun but has its own “path” to your window, a Guide is a specific expression of the Divine intended for your personal growth. Throughout history, figures like Socrates spoke of their “Daimon,” an internal voice that guided them away from error. These aren’t “extra” entities added to the universe; they are the universe’s way of personalizing its wisdom for you.

This “Personalization” is key to the troubleshooting of the experience. If you are trying to force a specific vision—say, you really want to see an angel with wings because you saw it in a movie—you might block the actual experience. The Divine might want to appear as a simple ball of blue light or a feeling of deep silence. If you are “searching” for a specific costume, you might walk right past the actor. Approach the experience with an open hands, saying, “Show me what I need to see, in the way I need to see it.”

The safety of this process is guaranteed by the Law of Resonance. Fear attracts fear, and love attracts love. Because the Divine is the source of all existence, it is the ultimate “High Frequency.” It cannot be “scary” because fear is a product of separation, and the Divine is the essence of connection. If you feel a “deceased loved one,” it is because your love for them creates a “frequency match.” The Divine uses that existing connection as a telephone line to reach you.

Consider the historical “Office of the Dead” or various ancestor veneration practices. These weren’t about “worshiping” the dead, but about maintaining a conscious link to the Unseen World. They understood that those who have “passed on” are simply in a different room of the same house. When the Divine utilizes the image of a grandparent, it is honoring that link. It is saying, “I know you loved this person, and I am using that love to show you that you are never alone.”

The “Wow!” moment we are looking for is often the moment you realize that the Divine and You are not two separate things. It is the realization that your own consciousness is a drop of water in the Divine ocean. As the mystic Rumi famously said, “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.” The reason the experience feels so “real” is that you are finally recognizing your own origin. It is the feeling of a puzzle piece finally clicking into place.

In your 5 to 30-minute practice, don’t worry about “making” something happen. The Divine is already there, like the stars in the daytime—you just can’t see them because the “sun” of your ego and daily tasks is too bright. By relaxing and asking for intensity, you are simply “dimming the lights” so the stars can become visible. Whether it manifests as a Spirit Guide, a deceased relative, or a profound sense of peace, trust that it is the perfect medicine for your soul at that moment.

Finally, remember that this is a living relationship. Just as you wouldn’t expect to know a person’s entire life story in five minutes, your understanding of the Divine will grow over time. Each session is a building block. The “mystery” of your existence doesn’t want to stay a secret; it wants to be known. It is waiting for you to get quiet enough, relaxed enough, and persistent enough to finally hear the “Welcome Home” that it has been whispering since the moment you were born
